Howard Norman Schultz was born June 10, 1916, in Veefkind, town of Sherman, the son of Lowell and Ida (nee Guetschow) Schultz. He was raised on the family farm and received his education at Veefkind School and Purdy High School. As a young man Howard worked on a farm in Lodi and then went to work in a C.C. Camp in Minocqua. He then returned to the Clark County area and worked for the Clark County Highway Department.

Howard met Virginia Sautner and they were united in marriage on Oct. 14, 1939, at the Veefkind Presbyterian Church. He continued to work for the county highway department until 1942, at which time they moved back to Veefkind to farm on the home farm. In 1974 Howard sold the farm to his son, Edward, and went to work for Ploman Tie Mill in Chili for a few years. He then worked part-time, driving truck for Paul Bugar in Loyal, and also helped his son on the farm. Howard resided in Loyal at the time of his death.

He was a past chairman for the town of Sherman in Clark County and had many interests, but especially enjoyed deer hunting with his sons and grandsons, playing cards on Thursdays with his friends in Chili, visiting with his friends at the Hometown Village apartments, fishing, baseball, the Packers, bowling in his younger years, bird watching and casinos.

He will be sadly missed by his children, John (Evelyn) Schultz of Loyal, Mary (Gary) Schellinger of Spencer, Rebecca (Robert) DeFries of Marshfield, Edward (Yvonne) Schultz of Chili, Scott (Pamela) Schultz of Loyal 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren his son-in-law, James Zoellner of Des Moines, Iowa sister, Alice Guttman of Marshfield and brother, Lawrence (Helen) Schultz of Granton.

He was preceded in death by his parents his wife, Virginia, on Sept. 29, 1996 and his daughter, LaVonne Zoellner on April 30, 2001.

George Bernard Shaw wrote: "This is the true joy in life - that being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one. That being a force of nature, instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die. For the harder I work the more I live, I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me. It's a sort of splendid torch which I've got to hold up for a moment and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations."
